Virtual Tutoring
Cedar Valley Dyslexia Services, LLC offers virtual reading and spelling tutoring for dyslexic individuals of all ages. Students connect with their tutor online via a screen-sharing platform called Koala Go. Koala Go livestreams the video and audio of participants while simultaneously allowing the student and teacher to use their avatars to interact with the environment.
Cedar Valley Dyslexia Services, LLC uses the Barton Reading & Spelling System and Foundation in Sounds as its two primary literacy programs. Both programs are based on the Orton-Gillingham method of instruction, which is designed to address the learning differences associated with dyslexia.
The Barton Reading & Spelling System is a simultaneously multisensory, explicit, and systematic phonics program that teaches students with dyslexia how to read and spell. The Barton System addresses the five major components of literacy instruction: phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary/background knowledge, fluency, and comprehension.
Foundation in Sounds increases phonemic awareness skills. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes. Phonemes are the smallest units of sound in our language. Phonemic awareness is a foundational literacy component by which all other reading skills are built upon. For students who have phonemic awareness deficits, Foundation in Sounds may be needed before beginning the Barton Reading & Spelling System.

Dyslexia DefinedThe International Dyslexia Association defines dyslexia as a “specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience than can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”
